Ryanair firms up 737 MAX -200 order

Irish budget carrier Ryanair has finalized its order for 100 737 MAX 200s and 100 options, confirming its status as launch customer for the high-capacity variant.

The aircraft deal was announced as a commitment in September, but Ryanair needed shareholder backing to turn it into a firm order.

After securing this rubber stamp Friday, Ryanair has wasted no time in cementing the $11 billion order with Boeing, with potential to increase to $22 billion if the options are firmed.

“Ryanair is proud and honored to become the lead operator of Boeing’s ‘game changer’ 737 MAX 200 aircraft,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said.

With this latest boost, Ryanair’s fleet will grow to 520 aircraft by 2024. The MAX 200s, which are slated for delivery between 2019 and 2024, will have eight more seats than Ryanair’s 737-800s.

Ryanair says the aircraft will reduce its fuel consumption by up to 18% and cut noise emissions by 40%.

“Our long-term partnership with Ryanair is a source of immense pride within Boeing and we are delighted to have the airline as the launch customer for the 737 MAX 200,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes VP-European Sales Todd Nelp said.
