CEO Paul Gregorowitsch announced at the launch of the Omani carrier’s inaugural flight to Singapore that the aircraft would be a mix of current-generation variants and the new generation 737 MAX. Ten will come direct from Boeing and 10 from lessors.
He did not specify numbers, but told Reuters that the current variants would be delivered from 2017 and the MAX from 2019.
Oman Air’s HQ in Muscat confirmed the story Wednesday but did not add any further details.
Oman Air already operates the 737-700 and 800 and has the -900ER on order and will use the new aircraft both for domestic services and regional routes around the Persian Gulf and to the Indian sub-continent.
The carrier, which has 36 aircraft—a mix of 737s and Airbus A330s—in the fleet at present, was already riding a wave of expansion before the latest order, with the first of an order for 787-8s due to arrive this year.
The airline has long spoken of expanding initially to a 50-strong fleet, with the prospect of increasing that number to 70 around the turn of the decade. This latest order will allow it to achieve that ambition.
