Boeing hands out hundreds of layoff notices

Boeing Co. handed out 429 new layoff notices to Washington state workers Friday, with the biggest cuts coming to the aircraft manufacturer's widebody operations in Everett. Of the 277 layoff notices to employees represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, 191 work in Everett, according to a union spokesman. That's where Boeing makes its 747 jumbo jets, long-range 777s and 767 jets and some of its 787 Dreamliners.

Boeing’s new 737 Max 9 jetliner made its first flight last week, taking off from Boeing’s complex in Renton and landing at Seattle’s Boeing Field to officially kick off the single-aisle aircraft’s flight testing program. The 737 Max 9 is the second member of Boeing’s 737 Max family, a new product line approved by Boeing’s board in 2011. The planes compete with the Airbus A320-A321 family.

Boeing customer WestJet in Canada plans new ultra-low-cost airline

Canadian discount airline WestJet, an important Boeing airplane customer, said Thursday it's launching a new, ultra-low-cost carrier in Canada later this year. The Calgary, Alberta-based discount airline, which operates in Canada much like Southwest Airlines does in the U.S., said in a news release that its new carrier launch is subject to reaching an agreement with its pilots and to securing required Canadian regulatory approvals.

Silk Way Group orders 10 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets worth $1 billion at list prices

Overseas aviation conglomerate Silk Way Group has placed an order for 10 Boeing 737 Max 8 airplanes. The deal for the Renton-made jets is worth $1.1 billion at list prices. Chicago-based Boeing did not say when the order was placed.
